The author has foreseen and forecast the future of the artic region due to global warming , which in turn, has started a race for rare earth minerals between the superpowers. Definitely an out of The box article. Well researched and documented. The author could have covered the consequences of global warming , rather then covering concerns over exploitation the consequences of climate change . Overall an excellent article .. interesting and well put forth.

Well researched piece. This is what the world is coming to. Dominate, occupy, plunder and create more issues for peace lovers. This is expected and we have not heard the last. Man and machine will fight for supremacy and in the end we will have more polluted and subdued life. My friend, a Doctor from Medanta went last month on a Russian ice breaker to the Northern lights and described the Arctic Circle as world Kumbh Mela. Anyone interested in power and grit is present there. Colonies are being established by sino-rus to physically hold ground. Many more are trying to jockey. At the moment Russia on the East and Canada plus US on the west dominate close to Tiksi, Norilsk, Murmsnsk….on east and Alaska, Inuvik, Resolute bay on west. The most crowded place is South ( Iceland, Norway, Sweden and Denmark). The Norwegian sea provides the easy entry. This is the reason why focus of Armed military action can be predicted in this region. Southerners have become more aggressive in populating the region so that the toe hold becomes a foot hold. US has a very narrow entry to the region while canada totally is restricted. Russia because of its vast expanse has more opportunities but they have their own internal power struggle. I feel the winner will be our friends on the Eastern front China. I liked the way you have approached the issue. Well done mate.

An interesting article which comprehensively deals with the post thaw situation in the Arctic region.
To enable the reader to relate better a sketch or map of the region, highlighting the countries on its periphery, as part of the article would have helped.
Under the current US dispensation wherein Climate change issues are being disregarded it is unlikely that any joint effort by the UN to mitigate the effects of the thaw would succeed. Some suggestions towards the end on the possible acceptable measures for implementation would have been welcome.
Well researched and analysed, after going through the article I am now enlightened on the background and recent developments!

Global warming is the major concern now for all countries. Although till now no strategic planning is made for the huge landmass of artic circle it could later be a problem for the developed countries. The virgin landmass with huge resources could be a reason for fight.World should plan and finalize strategy for proper use of it’s natural resources.

A very well researched and analysed article of unexplored newly exposed arctic region around the North Pole as a result of global warming which is going to become a future world conflict zone. Mankind has to control its greed to ensure that the ensuing effects of climate change do not adversely harm our planet and the race to exploit its mineral resources by interested powers do not turn it into a future center of conflict. A very interesting must read article for every student interested in world economics and fast changing international politics.

This articles reflects India’s ancient values of peaceful existence & spiritual towards the world or the physical environment. India was never exploitative & beyond cultural expansion there were no military adventures like the colonial powers. This colonial mindset of economic exploitation at the cost of environment is still going on by today’s powers.

A very relevant topic in today’s world when the entire globe is concerned about Climatic Change. While the quest for energy continues amongst the power hungry state, the uncalled for exploration & exploitation of these areas does pose a big question mark on it’s after effect.

The growing military presence (intent) by the so called super powers in the Arctic is unwarranted as this would lead us nowhere. It’s imperative that the nature is left untouched by humans for our future generations to survive with ease.

An informative article which is well articulated & gives the readers an insight on the Arctic issue.

An eye opener on what the future holds for us. The economic benefits are minuscule when weighed against the impending doom that the rapidly melting perms frost brings to mankind.
Will human greed again blind the competing nations?
    Only time will tell.
The author has comprehensively covered all facets of this unprecedented challenge which promises growth and despair in the same breath.

Congratulations sir this is very well written, we rarely see such well researched articles… Thank you for sharing your research and foresight with us.

You are absolutely right, its a power race and there is utter disregard for environment. Thinkers, philosophers predicted doomsday and rightly so, humankind’s senseless race for power makes the doomsday inevitable.

    Truly enjoyed reading it!

At the outset it is a Symphony which can be used for crystal gazing in different planes. Only 2% water is in the form of ice , glaciers but this 2% is the key to longevity of our planet. As the author brings out the greed for resources Vs our future security we need to step on the gas for more stringent rules for conservation of our Eco systems or else we shall face the wrath of nature. Pertinent to note is the rule implemented for third world Vis a Vis the stronger nations. We “Big Game” appears to be moving to polar regions now and will it lead to another world war or a Cold War is something that only time will tell.

Thanks to the Author, Col RNG Dastidar, for drawing our attention towards the Arctic and the emerging strategic & Geo-political situation in and around the Arctic circle. Various aspects and dimensions of the evolving situation have been touched upon in the Article. What needs to be understood is that the melting down of the Arctic is a foregone conclusion and no wishful thinking on our part is going to alter the same. So, our worries on environment are not going to be of any help and the World powers are not going to let go the opportunity for exploitation for their own benefit.
In this, one feels happy that India has taken practical steps, probably for the first time, to insure her future and be an equal partner.
