Indian women in police and paramilitary forces will finally get full body protectors which are made specifically for female bodies. Till now, women personnel were wearing the standard gear which was made with men in mind.
A full body protector is a personal full-body armour used by law-enforcement forces in riots situations and other violent encounters. It protects the body against bricks, knives, acid attacks, etc. The good news is that the protectors will also come in three sizes–small, medium, and large, so that personnel of all sizes are provided for. The bad news is that it has taken way too long.
It was in 1972 that the first woman joined the Indian Police service. We all know that Kiran Bedi was the first woman to walk into the male bastion and many women followed her footsteps. In another first, Punita Arora became a commissioned officer in the Indian Army in 1968. So, it has been almost five decades since Indian women have joined the defence bodies of our country.
