DRDO conducted the maiden flight test of Pinaka long-range guided rocket (LRGR 120) from Integrated Test Range at Chandipur in Odisha

India on Monday successfully conducted the first flight test of the indigenously developed Pinaka Long Range Guided Rocket (LRGR-120) from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur in Odisha, the Defence Ministry said.

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) carried out the test to validate the rocket’s maximum range of 120 km, during which it “demonstrated all in-flight manoeuvres as planned” and struck the target “with textbook precision,” the Ministry said in a statement.

The LRGR was launched from an in-service Pinaka launcher, underscoring the system’s versatility and its ability to fire rockets of varying ranges from the same platform.

All range instruments tracked the rocket throughout its trajectory, confirming the planned performance parameters, the Ministry added.

The LRGR-120 has been designed by DRDO’s Armament Research and Development Establishment in collaboration with the High Energy Materials Research Laboratory, with support from the Defence Research and Development Laboratory and Research Centre Imarat.

The test came on the same day the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) approved initial procurement proposals worth Rs 79,000 crore, including long-range guided rocket ammunition for the Army’s Pinaka multiple launch rocket system (MLRS), signalling a further push towards boosting indigenous firepower capabilities.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO scientists, saying the successful design and development of long-range guided rockets would significantly enhance the operational capabilities of the armed forces.
