India successfully test-fired the Agni-3 Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile from ITR Chandipur, Odisha

India on February 6 successfully test-fired the nuclear-capable Agni-3 intermediate-range ballistic missile from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur in Odisha, officials said, adding that the launch met all operational and technical objectives.

The test was conducted under the aegis of the Strategic Forces Command (SFC), which is responsible for managing the country’s strategic nuclear assets. In a brief statement, officials said the launch validated all mission parameters and reaffirmed the credibility of India’s deterrence posture.

According to defence officials, the trial once again demonstrated the reliability and operational readiness of the missile system, which remains a key element of India’s strategic arsenal despite the induction and testing of newer Agni variants in recent years.

Agni-3 is an intermediate-range ballistic missile with a strike range of about 3,000 to 3,500 kilometres, giving India the capability to engage strategic targets deep inside adversary territory. The missile has been in service with the SFC since 2011 and was developed indigenously as part of India’s long-term strategic missile programme.

The missile is a two-stage, solid-fuel-powered system. After the first stage completes its burn, the second stage ignites to carry the missile along its planned trajectory, a sequence designed to ensure flight stability and accuracy. It is capable of carrying a payload of up to 1,500 kilograms.

Primarily designed as a nuclear delivery platform, Agni-3 is believed to be capable of carrying a warhead with an estimated yield of 200 to 300 kilotons. The missile is around 16.7 metres long and 2 metres in diameter, with a launch weight of approximately 48,300 kilograms.

Defence officials said the latest test adds to a growing list of validated strategic missile systems and reflects India’s continued emphasis on maintaining a credible minimum deterrent amid a complex and evolving regional security environment.
