The Indian Army and the Indian Air Force (IAF) undertook extensive support operations to ensure the seamless conduct of Maha Kumbh 2025 in Prayagraj, one of the world’s largest religious gatherings. From 24/7 flight operations to disaster response, security, and infrastructure development, the armed forces played a crucial role in facilitating the pilgrimage for millions of devotees and ensuring their safety.
While the Central Air Command spearheaded the IAF’s logistical and operational support, ensuring uninterrupted civil aviation services, the Army was instrumental in providing security, disaster response, and infrastructure development for Maha Kumbh 2025. The Purva UP and MP Sub Area and the Red Eagle Division played a key role in managing large-scale crowd movements, securing vital locations, and providing logistical and medical support. Infrastructure projects undertaken by the Army included the construction of four new flyovers, 14 roads over/under bridges, and the expansion of over 100 roads. Additionally, the Army assisted in projects related to airport connectivity, railway station upgrades, and temple restoration. Both the IAF and the Army were ready 24×7 for providing humanitarian aid and disaster relief (HADR) coverage.
Specialized naval and combat divers were deployed to patrol the Sangam area, successfully rescuing 22 individuals from drowning. “The unwavering vigilance of our troops has been critical in ensuring the safety of millions of pilgrims. Their swift response and professionalism have demonstrated the Army’s commitment to humanitarian efforts,” said a senior Army officer.
Air Force Station Bamrauli, one of India’s oldest air bases, became a hub for civil and chartered flight operations between December 20 last year and February 27. To handle the increased air traffic, the base maintained its Instrument Landing System (ILS) at CAT-II standards, allowing smooth operations despite severe winter fog. “The controllers at ATC, manned only by IAF officers, have handled 2,386 scheduled and 1,112 non-scheduled flights. Passenger movement during the period has exceeded 3.5 lakh,” said a senior IAF officer.
Recognizing the surge in air traffic, the entire Bamrauli airspace was made available for civil flights by temporarily relocating military training activities. This enabled an exponential increase in daily flights—from just 15 on January 10 to a record 186 flights on February 15. Additionally, around 50 helicopter flights per day operated over the Sangam area, providing surveillance and joyrides for pilgrims.
Infrastructure projects spearheaded by the IAF included the construction of a four-lane highway connecting Kaushambi to the airport, a railway overbridge at Begum Bazar, and the expansion of the Prayagraj airport terminal. These projects significantly improved accessibility for the large influx of visitors.
Enhancing Pilgrim Experience at Akshayavat Corridor
The Indian Army undertook the beautification and expansion of the Akshayavat Corridor, a sacred site within OD Fort, allowing approximately 70 lakh pilgrims to visit during the event. To facilitate smooth pilgrim movement, a dedicated boat service at Saraswati Ghat provided safe access to Triveni Sangam, with 56 boats, two jetties, a floating platform, and a rescue boat deployed.
Disaster Preparedness and Medical Assistance
To enhance disaster preparedness, the Army conducted extensive mock drills in coordination with the Uttar Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (UP SDMA) and other agencies. A Rescue Coordination Team, equipped with advanced first-aid and casualty evacuation tools, was stationed at the Mela site.
Medical facilities were established, including a Medical Aid Post at the Mela area, a Sector Hospital at OD Fort, an 18-bed day-care centre for dehydrated pilgrims, and an additional 50 beds at Prayagraj. A floating ambulance near Sangam ensured emergency medical assistance.
Accommodation and Hospitality Services
The Army facilitated accommodations for pilgrims by arranging 223 guest rooms, 454 dormitory beds, and setting up 30 tents. Additionally, ten existing quarters were refurbished to provide enhanced lodging facilities.
The Indian Army and Air Force’s extensive contributions to Maha Kumbh 2025 have ensured millions of devotees a smooth, secure, and well-organized experience. Their efforts in security, infrastructure, disaster response, and aviation management have underscored their commitment to public service and nation-building, making this grand event a resounding success.
