The Indian Navy has reached another milestone in its pursuit of indigenous shipbuilding with the launch of the second multi-purpose vessel (MPV), ‘Utkarsh’, on January 13. The launch took place at the Kattupalli Shipyard near Chennai, marking a significant step forward in bolstering India’s maritime capabilities.
Built by L&T Shipbuilding Limited, the vessel’s name, Utkarsh—meaning “Superior in Conduct”—embodies the Navy’s vision of excellence. This achievement comes within just three months of the launch of the first MPV, ‘INS Samarthak’, underscoring L&T’s efficiency and commitment to delivery timelines.
Versatile Capabilities
The 106-meter-long, 18.6-meter-wide vessel, with a displacement of over 3,750 tonnes and a top speed of 15 knots, is designed to perform a range of critical operations. Utkarsh is equipped for towing ships, launching and recovering various targets, operating unmanned autonomous vehicles, and serving as a platform for trials of indigenous weapons and sensors. Additionally, this vessel will significantly enhance the Navy’s capabilities in maritime surveillance, patrolling, and disaster relief operations.
The launch of Utkarsh reflects the Indian Navy’s ongoing efforts to promote self-reliance in defence manufacturing. In a statement, the Ministry of Defence said “This endeavour is in line with Indian Navy efforts towards indigenous shipbuilding and the launch of this vessel by a private Indian shipyard showcases the country’s strides in indigenous shipbuilding, in consonance with the government of India’s vision for ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make in India’ initiative”.
Speaking on the occasion, A.T. Ramchandani, Senior Vice President & Head of L&T Precision Engineering & Systems, highlighted the company’s dedication to advancing India’s maritime capabilities.
“The successful launch of the second MPV ahead of schedule underscores L&T’s unwavering commitment to bolster India’s national security. With our unmatched in-house design expertise and execution prowess, we are committed to providing cutting-edge defence platforms to support Indian Navy’s fleet expansion needs,” Ramchandani said.
The launch ceremony was graced by Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, along with Vice Admiral B. Sivakumar, Controller of Warship Production & Acquisition, and other senior officials from the Indian Navy. Notable attendees included Jayant Damodar Patil, Advisor to the CMD of L&T, and Arun Ramchandani, Head of L&T Precision Engineering & Systems.
The launch of Utkarsh reinforces India’s naval strength and serves as a testament to the country’s growing capabilities in defence manufacturing. With initiatives like these, India continues to chart a course toward self-reliance and global maritime leadership.
