Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has expressed his interest in strengthening defence cooperation with Pakistan, the army announced on Friday. According to a statement by the Pakistan Army, the Malaysian leader met with Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir in a meeting of great importance, to discuss bilateral strategic interests, regional security, and defence cooperation.
Prime Minister Ibrahim praised the role of the Pakistan Armed Forces in maintaining regional peace and stability. He acknowledged their professionalism and sacrifices in the fight against terrorism, according to the statement.
“He emphasized the need to enhance bilateral ties, especially military relations, between the two friendly nations,” the Army stated. The Malaysian Prime Minister also invited the COAS to visit Malaysia in the same context.
Munir thanked the Prime Minister for the invitation and appreciated the successful visit to Pakistan, which will help further improve the enduring and historic ties between the two countries and their militaries.
Earlier on Thursday, the Malaysian PM reiterated his country’s support of the UN Security Council resolution on Kashmir during his three-day visit to Pakistan.
“Regarding Kashmir, we have clearly stated that we are committed to supporting the UN Security Council resolution, while human rights concerns are, of course, a priority for us,” Ibrahim said in a press conference following a bilateral meeting with his Pakistani counterpart Shehbaz Sharif.
His reference aimed at the 1948 UN Security Council resolution. He added that Malaysia would continue to address the Kashmir issue “through acceptable channels” and hoped the matter would be “amicably resolved.”
