The National Cadet Corps (NCC) has come a long way since its inception in 1948 with just 20,000 cadets. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has approved of expanding the sanctioned strength of NCC cadets with an increase of 3 lakh cadets.
In a statement, the Ministry of Defence has expanded the sanctioned strength of NCC up to 20 lakh cadets, making it the largest uniformed youth organisation in the world. After the National Education Policy 2020 was implemented, NCC is being offered as an elective subject, nationwide.
NCC aims to develop a strong character, comradeship, discipline, a secular outlook, and a spirit of selfless service among young citizens. In addition, the organisation is also creating a pool of trained, and motivated youth with leadership qualities to serve the nation regardless of their career choices, states the ministry.
The expansion will have a proportional distribution of NCC vacancies across the country. It will reduce the waiting list of institutions aspiring to establish an NCC Unit at their universities or colleges. The expansion plan will establish four new Group Headquarters and add two new NCC units. The plan also involves proposing an employment opportunity for ex-servicemen as NCC instructors. The initiative will ensure quality training to the NCC cadets and provide employment to veterans, said the ministry.
According to the ministry, the expansion signifies a dedication to shaping future leaders of the country, embodying discipline, leadership and service. The NCC aims to create a transformative impact, fostering an environment where youth meaningfully contribute to nation-building. The initiative will expand the base of motivated, disciplined and patriotic youth of the ‘Amrit Peedhi’ who will contribute towards achieving the goal of ‘Viksit Bharat’, said the ministry of defence.
