The Indian Army and the United Services Institution of India (USI) hosted the second edition of the “Lieutenant General PS Bhagat Memorial Lecture” at the Manekshaw Centre on Friday, focusing on the theme “Armed Forces Contribution to Realise the Vision of a Rising India.” This event is part of the Lt Gen PS Bhagat Memorial Chair of Excellence, established at USI by the Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) on October 14, 2022.
Lieutenant General KT Parnaik (Retd), Governor of Arunachal Pradesh, delivered the keynote address. He highlighted the significant role and contributions of the Indian Armed Forces in nation-building and shared anecdotes from Lieutenant General Bhagat’s distinguished military career. He also discussed the Indian Armed Forces’ involvement in out-of-area contingencies and defence diplomacy. He shared insights on the evolution of warfare, modernization of the armed forces, self-reliance, technology infusion, net-centric, and grey zone warfare.
General Manoj Pande, the COAS, also addressed the gathering, paying tribute to Lieutenant General Bhagat’s bravery during World War II. He recalled Bhagat’s heroic actions, which earned him the Victoria Cross, noting his extraordinary courage in clearing minefields under enemy fire. General Pande emphasized Bhagat’s forward-thinking vision, which he articulated in his books “Forging the Shield,” “The Shield and the Sword,” and “Wielding of Authority in Emerging Countries,” written nearly seven decades ago.
The event was attended by numerous dignitaries, including former Army Chiefs General JJ Singh (Retd), General Deepak Kapoor (Retd), and General MM Naravane (Retd), along with senior serving officers, veterans, and civilian dignitaries. It served as an occasion to draw inspiration from Lieutenant General Bhagat’s legacy, which has left a lasting impact on the history of the Indian Army.
A highlight of the event was the release of the book “The Victoria Cross Icon: Vision and Legacy,” authored by Major General Shashikant G Pitre (Retd). The book, introduced by the author, provides a comprehensive account of Bhagat’s military contributions, strategic vision, administrative skills, leadership qualities, and deep connection with his troops.
