Defence simulation major Zen Technologies has scored a legal win by securing the revocation of a competing Indian patent that overlapped with its existing innovations in combat training systems.

The contested patent, “System for Target Shooting Training for Users in a Controlled Environment” (Indian Patent No. 429859), was filed by individuals linked to MAG5 Innovations Pvt. Ltd. Zen filed a post-grant opposition in October 2023, arguing that the patent lacked novelty, offered no inventive step, and merely combined known elements without technical synergy.

On August 6, 2025, the Assistant Controller of Patents and Designs upheld Zen’s objections and revoked the patent under Sections 25(2)(b), (e), and (f) of the Patents Act, 1970, according to the company’s statement. The decision found that the claimed invention did not meet Indian patentability standards and failed to demonstrate originality or inventive merit.

Zen’s opposition was supported by its earlier patents in motion platforms, containerised simulation environments, and sensory-enhanced training systems – technologies that the company says have shaped its leadership in modern defence training infrastructure.

“This ruling not only safeguards our intellectual property but also reinforces our commitment to innovation and R&D leadership,” a Zen spokesperson said, adding that the company may explore further legal remedies, including claims for damages.

Zen Technologies, which maintains one of the largest patent portfolios in the defence training sector, continues to invest in next-generation simulation systems for military and security forces in India and abroad.
