MoD signed a Rs 770-crore contract with BEL to procure Improved Low Level Light Weight Radars (LLLR-I) for Indian Army

The Ministry of Defence on Wednesday signed a Rs 770-crore contract with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) to procure Improved Low Level Light Weight Radars (LLLR-I) for the Indian Army, strengthening its ability to detect and track low-flying aircraft and emerging drone threats.

The contract was signed in New Delhi in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh.

The LLLR-I system is designed to detect and track fighter-sized aerial targets as well as mini and micro drones. It also features an aerial target prioritisation capability, enabling operators to assess and respond to multiple threats more effectively. The system is expected to strengthen the Army’s air defence against the growing threat posed by unmanned aerial systems (UAS).

The procurement is also aimed at advancing the government’s push for indigenous defence manufacturing. The Ministry said the contract would support the domestic defence industrial ecosystem, including micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), and contribute to building a self-reliant and globally competitive defence industry under the Viksit Bharat @2047 vision.
