The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has signed a heavy-duty contract with Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) to supply the Indian Navy with Medium-Range Surface-to-Air Missiles (MRSAMs). The contract, valued at approximately Rs 2,960 crore, was inked in the presence of the Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh in New Delhi on January 16.
The MRSAM system, a critical component of the Navy’s defence infrastructure, is currently deployed onboard multiple Indian naval ships. It is also slated to be integrated into the majority of future naval platforms, enhancing the Navy’s ability to counter evolving aerial threats. This agreement marks a significant step in strengthening India’s defence capabilities and advancing the nation’s vision of self-reliance in military technology.
Under the Government of India’s flagship initiative, Aatmanirbhar Bharat, BDL will deliver the MRSAMs under the ‘Buy (Indian)’ category, with a substantial proportion of Indigenous content. The project is expected to generate approximately 3.5 lakh man-days of employment within the defence manufacturing ecosystem, including contributions from numerous Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), according to the Defence Ministry statement.
