Global aerospace major Boeing has commenced the production of the AH-64 Apaches attack helicopter e-model at its facility in Mesa, Arizona in United states. In 2020, Boeing completed delivery of 22 Indian Air Force E-model Apaches and signed a contract to produce six AH-64Es for the Indian Army. The delivery of the Indian Army’s Apaches is scheduled for 2024.
These AH-64E helicopters are renowned for their advanced technology and will help enhance India’s defence capabilities, building on a collaboration between Boeing and Tata Boeing Aerospace Limited (TBAL), which has delivered the first AH-64 Apache fuselage to the Indian Army.
“We are pleased to reach yet another significant milestone, highlighting Boeing’s unwavering commitment to support India’s defense capabilities,” said Salil Gupte, President, Boeing India. “The advanced technology and proven performance of the AH-64 will enhance the Indian Army’s operational readiness and strengthen its defense capabilities,” he added further.
This development is in line with the government’s “Make in India” initiative which also highlights the earlier manufacture of the Apache helicopter’s fuselage at the Tata Boeing Aerospace facility in Hyderabad.
The Apache attack helicopter will substantially augment the Indian Army’s capabilities. Equipped with 16 anti-tank AGM-114 Hellfire and Stringer missiles, alongside Hydra-70 unguided missiles, these three distinct missile types possess specialised capabilities for neutralising armoured vehicles, countering mid-air threats and engaging ground targets. The attack helicopter is also armed with a 30-mm chain gun capable of firing 1,200 rounds, maintaining a rate of fire between 600 and 650 rounds per minute.
The AH64 features a modern radar system and enhanced stealth capabilities, rendering it less susceptible to detection, and enabling it to operate at lower altitudes. The helicopter can attain a maximum speed of 280 km/h at higher altitudes, offering an extended combat and ferry range.
“The AH-64E continues to be the world’s premier attack helicopter,” said Christina Upah, Vice President of Attack Helicopter Programs and senior Boeing Mesa site executive. “The AH-64 provides customers with unparalleled lethality and survivability, and we are thrilled to provide those capabilities to the Indian Army.”
