The Platform for Indian Defence Industry

EDITOR-IN-CHIEF'S NOTE

The fortnight witnessed India's annual pageant being re-run on the Rajpath. With the French President as Chief Guest, and a French contingent leading the march past, the parade celebrated India's diversity and its growing military might.

The other grand event that received global coverage was the Bahrain Airshow from 21 to 23 January, 2016. Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd's Tejas, amongst the world's smallest lightweight, multi role single engine tactical fighter aircraft, flew its first demo outside India leaving none in the stands in any doubt about its capabilities. Sarang, a team of four Indian Air Force-modified HAL Dhruv helicopters, also known as ALH (Advanced Light Helicopter) staged an aerial display to further announce India's arrival in the flying machines market.

The major news stories included the launch of 'Start up India' on 16 January, 2016 by the Finance Minister Arun Jaitley with a host of CEOs and corporate bigwigs in attendance. Of import to the Indian Defence Industry was the news of submission of report on ‘Strategic Partners' in the defence sector. Reportedly, the committee has recommended stiff guidelines. The report is yet to be made public.

The Rafale deal continues to be in the news. With every other aspect having been agreed upon, the price negotiations continue. There is good news for the Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft project in collaboration with the Russians, also. Apparently, IAF and Sukhoi have covered considerable ground to progress the project further.

Next fortnight we hope to bring to you two interviews with leading players in the IDI. Do login to read our select aggregation of news of interest to the IDI and also opinion pieces that we promise will be offbeat, incisive and exclusive.

Make In India: Imperatives to promote dual use technology industries to propel defence manufacturing
