CDS Gen Anil Chauhan inaugurated renovated runway at Air Force Station Car Nicobar

Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan inaugurated the upgraded runway at the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) Car Nicobar air base in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Friday.

An official stated, “The CDS inaugurated the resurfaced and upgraded runway at the IAF’s Car Nicobar Air Base.” Located approximately 535 km from Sri Vijaya Puram, Car Nicobar, in the Nicobar district, experienced significant damage during the 2004 tsunami.

The upgraded runway will enhance the eastern front’s capabilities by enabling strategic oversight of the Malacca Strait, a crucial maritime passage for international trade and energy supplies. This improvement will enable the Indian Air Force (IAF) to conduct rapid air operations.

The apron areas of the runway have been expanded to facilitate smooth aircraft movement. Additionally, the new facility will enable the IAF to conduct long-range firing exercises in a shorter timeframe.

A senior Command official remarked, “The CDS’s visit underscores the strategic importance of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands for national security, aligning with our ‘Act East’ policy and the Prime Minister’s vision for security and growth in the region.”

The Airport Authority of India has invited bids for Project Management Consultancy services for the development of a greenfield airport on Great Nicobar Island. It aims to create a state-of-the-art airport covering a total of 1,039 hectares, capable of accommodating the Airbus A380. It will be for all-weather operations, ensuring consistent accessibility regardless of environmental conditions. The proposed airport will feature a 4,000-meter by 75-meter runway and a 4,800-meter by 45-meter taxiway, capable of handling four wide-body and 28 narrow-body aircraft simultaneously.
