The Centre for Joint Warfare Studies (CENJOWS) hosted a high-level “UAS Warfare with Special Focus on Counter-UAS” seminar in the capital today. General Anil Chauhan, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), delivered the keynote address, emphasizing the transformative role of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) in modern warfare and underscoring the urgent need for a comprehensive counter-UAS framework.

In his address, General Chauhan highlighted the rapid advancements in robotics and artificial intelligence, as well as the swift pace of technological change, which have turned UAS into a disruptive element in contemporary conflicts. He illustrated his points by referencing ongoing global conflicts, emphasizing how drones are redefining warfare dynamics. According to him, the cost-effectiveness and high-impact capabilities of UAS present significant challenges to traditional military strategies.

The CDS also called for establishing a standardized nomenclature and doctrinal clarity regarding UAS and uncrewed systems across the Indian Armed Forces. He elaborated on the classification of UAS into four generations and the need to develop an integrated Counter-UAS system. Stressing the importance of synergy among users, designers, and manufacturers, he emphasized that fostering indigenous capabilities is critical to ensuring India’s self-reliant defence future.

The seminar gathered defence experts, military officials, and academia to discuss the implications of UAS technology and the necessity for countries to develop comprehensive countermeasures to safeguard national security. As the landscape of warfare continues to evolve, the insights shared during this seminar are expected to play a crucial role in shaping future defence policies and strategies.

An accompanying exhibition showcased groundbreaking innovations in drone and counter-drone technologies, further reinforcing India’s position as a leader in modern warfare capabilities. The seminar underscored the importance of bridging technological advancements with strategic policy frameworks to enhance the nation’s security landscape.
