Lieutenant General Dinesh Singh Rana, Commander-in-Chief, Andaman and Nicobar Command (CINCAN) and Colonel of The Garhwal Rifles and Garhwal Scouts, led a solemn military ceremony in Dharamshala on Tuesday to honour the heroic sacrifice of Captain Chander Narain Singh, Maha Vir Chakra (MVC), on the 60th anniversary of his martyrdom.

Capt CN Singh, a valiant officer of the 2nd Battalion, The Garhwal Rifles, was posthumously awarded the Maha Vir Chakra, India’s second-highest gallantry award, for his conspicuous bravery during the Indo-Pak War of 1965, in which he laid down his life fighting Pakistani infiltrators on August 5.

In a poignant moment during the ceremony, the late officer’s brother, Sukhdev Singh, presented Capt Singh’s MVC and other service medals to the Regiment. The medals were received by Lt Gen Rana, underlining the deep respect and enduring legacy the Regiment accords to its fallen heroes.

Lt Gen Rana, in his address, paid glowing tribute to Capt CN Singh and his family, describing the officer as “a shining example of courage, leadership, and supreme sacrifice.” He noted that Capt Singh’s story would remain a source of inspiration for future generations of Indian soldiers and citizens alike.

The ceremony was also attended by Lieutenant General Rajan Sharawat, GOC 9 Corps; Brigadier Vinod Singh Negi, Commandant of the Garhwal Rifles Regimental Centre; veterans, serving officers, and jawans of the Regiment.

The medals will be preserved and displayed at the Garhwal Rifles Regimental Centre Museum in Lansdowne, Uttarakhand, where they will serve as a powerful reminder of the Regiment’s valour and the selfless service of its soldiers.

Lt Gen Rana’s presence and personal involvement in the ceremony underscored the Army’s unwavering commitment to honouring its martyrs and staying connected with the families of its heroes. He called upon all ranks to draw strength from such legacies and uphold the highest traditions of the Regiment.
