In a significant push towards fostering defence innovation, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) convened a high-level brainstorming session with over 50 start-ups and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) at South Block on March 24-25. The discussions, led by Secretary (Defence Production) Sanjeev Kumar, aimed at identifying challenges, exploring opportunities, and accelerating innovation in critical and emerging technology domains.

The participating start-ups and MSMEs, many of which are engaged with the Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) initiative, delved into key areas such as space technologies, quantum computing, electronic warfare, drones, artificial intelligence and machine learning, radar systems, cybersecurity, and advanced materials. The MoD statement stated that these deliberations provided insights into the dual-use potential of these technologies in both civil and military applications.

Expressing appreciation for the industry’s contributions, Secretary DP noted that the discussions would help fine-tune existing policies and procedures, ensuring broader participation of deep-tech start-ups in defence projects. The engagement reflects the government’s commitment to leveraging indigenous innovation to strengthen India’s defence ecosystem.

This initiative aligns with India’s larger vision of self-reliance in defence manufacturing under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat mission, reinforcing the role of start-ups and MSMEs as key drivers of next-generation military capabilities.
