The 6th edition of the India-Japan joint military exercise, Dharma Guardian, is in full swing at Japan’s East Fuji Training Area. Running from February 24 to March 9, the exercise underscores the growing defence cooperation between the two nations as they engage in extensive training activities aimed at enhancing interoperability and strategic coordination.

This year’s focus is on counterterrorism operations in urban terrain—an area of critical importance given the evolving global security landscape. Troops from both countries are refining their combat tactics, honing their ability to conduct operations in complex urban settings, and enhancing their overall operational readiness.

In addition to urban warfare drills, the exercise features simulated United Nations peacekeeping operations. These simulations mirror real-world scenarios where multinational forces must collaborate effectively in challenging environments, reinforcing their ability to respond to international crises.

As Dharma Guardian progresses, both forces are engaging in a series of tactical drills, exchanging combat experiences and strengthening their operational capabilities. The exercise is designed to improve interoperability, ensuring that Indian and Japanese forces can seamlessly work together in future peacekeeping, counter-terrorism, or humanitarian missions.

Beyond military training, Dharma Guardian also fosters cultural exchange and camaraderie among the participating troops. Soldiers from both nations showcase their respective traditions and heritage, reinforcing bonds of friendship and mutual respect. This cultural interaction plays a vital role in deepening bilateral ties beyond the battlefield.

The exercise builds on the momentum of the Indian Chief of Army Staff’s visit to Japan in October 2024, further solidifying defence ties between the two nations. Through shared best practices and lessons learned, Dharma Guardian serves as a platform for enhancing military cooperation and strengthening regional security.

By reinforcing their commitment to a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific, India and Japan continue to collaborate in ensuring regional stability and security. The ongoing joint exercise is a testament to their shared vision and growing strategic partnership in an increasingly complex geopolitical landscape.
