India and France kick off on Sunday the eighth edition of the ‘Garuda’ air combat exercise at Mont-de-Marsan, aimed at deepening military interoperability and reinforcing the strategic partnership between the two nations. The Indian Air Force (IAF) has deployed six Sukhoi-30MKI fighter jets, supported by an IL-78 mid-air refueller and a C-17 Globemaster-III transport aircraft, for the drills scheduled from November 16 to 27.

The Su-30MKIs will train alongside French Air and Space Force (FASF) assets, including Rafale multirole fighters, in complex simulated combat missions. The exercise will feature advanced air-to-air engagements, air defence operations, and coordinated strike missions designed to mirror high-intensity operational environments.

“The aim is to refine joint tactics and procedures, enable mutual learning, and strengthen interoperability between the IAF and the FASF,” an officer said. The engagement will also facilitate professional exchanges and the sharing of operational experience and best practices.

Garuda 25 provides a key platform for enhancing combined operational readiness, officials said, underscoring the IAF’s commitment to expanding international defence cooperation through regular bilateral and multilateral exercises.
