The Indian Air Force is increasingly relying on software-driven systems and joint operational frameworks to meet the demands of modern warfare, Air Chief Marshal AP Singh said during a discussion with Nitin Gokhale, Founder, BharatShakti.in, and StratNewsGlobal.in.

The conversation highlighted the Air Force’s focus on air defence, theatre-level planning, inter-service coordination, and policy alignment with paramilitary forces.

When asked how the IAF manages the rapid pace of technological change, Singh explained that the Air Force has long adapted to evolving tools and platforms. “The pace of innovation has been exponential, particularly in software-based systems,” he said. “Training and operational readiness are critical, those who cannot adapt to technology will not be effective in high-intensity scenarios.”

On air defence and surveillance, Singh noted that modern systems integrate radars, aircraft, drones, and automated response networks. This networked approach enhances situational awareness and enables faster, more precise decision-making.

Gokhale also asked about Operation Sindoor, a recent mission demonstrating the IAF’s operational capabilities. Singh described it as an example of effective coordination across the Air Force, Army, Navy, and paramilitary forces, under clear guidance and structured planning. He emphasized that jointness and theatre-level execution were key to the mission’s effectiveness, allowing integrated action across multiple operational domains.

Regarding theatreisation and joint operations, Singh said that while organizational structures are important, operational flexibility is essential. “Normalizing coordination across services and agencies ensures that decisions can be implemented efficiently in real time,” he said.

On policy and paramilitary coordination, Singh stressed that aligning political direction, operational planning, and inter-agency cooperation is crucial for coherent execution. He noted that the Air Force continually works to improve these linkages, ensuring all elements of national security function in a synchronized manner.

Looking ahead, Singh concluded that the IAF will continue to focus on software-enabled operations, advanced training, joint-force readiness, and integrated policy coordination to maintain responsiveness and effectiveness in a rapidly evolving security environment.
