The Indian Navy’s indigenously designed and built guided-missile destroyer, INS Mumbai, is participating in the fourth edition of the Multinational Exercise La Perouse, currently being held in the South Eastern Ocean Region. As part of its mission deployment, the destroyer recently arrived for an operational visit in Jakarta, Indonesia.
The exercise brings together naval forces from several maritime partners, including the Royal Australian Navy, French Navy, Royal Navy, United States Navy, Indonesian Navy, Royal Malaysian Navy, Republic of Singapore Navy, and Royal Canadian Navy. This collaborative effort underscores the commitment of like-minded navies to ensuring a rules-based international maritime order.
The primary objective of Exercise La Perouse is to enhance Maritime Situational Awareness by fostering cooperation in maritime surveillance, interdiction operations, air operations, and information sharing. The exercise also provides a platform for advanced training in surface warfare, anti-air warfare, air defence, cross-deck landings, tactical manoeuvres, and Visit, Board, Search, and Seizure (VBSS) operations.
According to the Indian Navy, these complex, multi-domain exercises aim to strengthen interoperability, coordination, and tactical synergy among participating navies. The event facilitates the development of closer ties through joint planning, operational execution, and real-time information sharing.
INS Mumbai’s participation exemplifies the Indian Navy’s commitment to building stronger maritime partnerships and enhancing regional security. It aligns with India’s SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) vision, which emphasizes maritime collaboration and the pursuit of a safer, more secure Indo-Pacific region.
The inclusion of INS Mumbai in such a high-profile exercise further highlights India’s capability to operate alongside advanced navies, reinforcing its role as a key maritime power committed to upholding stability and cooperation in the region.
