In a major push to enhance collaborative maritime efforts across the Indian Ocean, a modernised infrastructure at the Information Fusion Centre – Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR) in Gurugram was inaugurated today.

Speaking at the event, Vice Admiral Tarun Sobti, Deputy Chief of Naval Staff, talked about the increasing maritime challenges in the region, stressing the urgency of stronger partnerships and joint efforts to maintain peace and stability across the Indian Ocean.

Originally set up in December 2018, the IFC-IOR has steadily evolved into a central hub for information exchange and maritime cooperation. The Centre hosts International Liaison Officers (ILOs) from partner nations, enabling real-time sharing of critical maritime data. These collaborative efforts are key in responding to threats such as piracy, smuggling, illegal fishing, and irregular migration, which continue to impact the safety of vital sea lanes.

The newly unveiled facility is equipped to host liaison officers from 26 partner nations and regional groupings, including organisations such as IORA and the DCoC/JA. The upgraded infrastructure is expected to streamline coordination and improve the speed and efficiency of operational responses in the region.

A major highlight of the inauguration was the launch of a new analytical tool named MANTRA (Maritime Analytics Tool for Regional Awareness). Developed to improve tracking of commercial maritime traffic, MANTRA will significantly enhance surveillance capabilities and overall maritime domain awareness.

The IFC-IOR’s expanded capabilities align with India’s regional maritime vision—cooperation for mutual security, development, and trust. The Centre now engages with over 50 maritime frameworks and nearly 30 countries, contributing toward a shared vision of a safe, secure, and economically vibrant Indian Ocean Region.

The Indian Ocean remains one of the most critical maritime trade corridors globally, handling a vast share of oil, bulk cargo, and container movement. However, this strategic importance also makes it vulnerable to a wide range of threats. As such, collaborative structures like the IFC-IOR are essential for maintaining open and secure sea lines of communication.

The Indian Navy, through initiatives like this, continues to advocate for greater transparency, shared responsibility, and regional solidarity in tackling maritime challenges that transcend borders.

The event was attended by senior military officials, diplomats, and representatives from strategic ministries and international defence agencies.
