The expedition forms a crucial part of their preparation for the upcoming circumnavigation of the globe, scheduled later this year. The officers have been rigorously preparing themselves for the past two and a half years, following a selection process. Before this expedition, the officers sailed from Goa to Mauritius and back in 2022, followed by a voyage from Goa to Rio via Cape Town and back, and another sailing expedition from Goa to Port Blair and back in double-handed mode. This expedition will be their last consolidation voyage before the circumnavigation planned to commence in September this year. The flag-off ceremony was graced by Commander Abhilash Tomy (Retd), KC, NM, a distinguished yachtsman who has circumnavigated the globe non-stop on sailing boats, twice. He has been mentoring the two women officers for the past six months.
In his address, he expressed his pride in flagging off this monumental expedition and expressed full confidence in the capabilities of the two women officers, wishing them fair winds and smooth seas on their historic voyage. The expedition of INSV Tarini signifies a big step forward in India’s maritime endeavours, showcasing the nation’s growing prominence in global maritime activities and gender equality on the high seas. It is a testament to the Indian Navy’s commitment to fostering excellence and diversity within its ranks. The vessel is expected to reach Port Louis, Mauritius on 20th March.
