Indian Navy will commission Diving Support Craft (DSC) A20 on December 16

The Indian Navy will commission DSC-A20, the first vessel in a new series of indigenously designed and built Diving Support Craft (DSC), at Kochi on December 16. The ceremony, to be held under the aegis of the Southern Naval Command, will be presided over by Vice Admiral Sameer Saxena, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Naval Command.

The induction of DSC-A20 marks a significant boost to the Navy’s specialised diving and underwater mission capabilities. Purpose-built for a wide range of underwater tasks in coastal waters, the craft is equipped with advanced diving systems that meet the highest global safety and operational efficiency standards.

DSC A20 is the lead ship in a five-vessel series and features a catamaran hull form that provides superior stability, increased deck area, and improved seakeeping performance. The 390-ton craft has been designed and constructed in accordance with the Naval Rules and Regulations of the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS). Its hydrodynamic design was validated through extensive model testing at the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL) in Visakhapatnam.

The commissioning of the craft underscores India’s progress toward Aatmanirbharta and reflects the growing success of the ‘Make in India’ initiative in the maritime sector. The project represents effective collaboration among the Indian Navy, domestic shipbuilders, and national research institutions to deliver a technologically advanced, mission-critical platform.

Once commissioned, DSC-A20 will be based in Kochi and operated by the Southern Naval Command. Its induction is expected to significantly enhance the Navy’s capability in diving support, underwater inspection, salvage assistance, and coastal operational deployment.
