Surgeon Vice Admiral Kavita Sahai assumed charge as the Director General Medical Services of Indian Navy on Monday. An alumnus of the Armed Forces Medical College Pune, she was commissioned into the Army Medical Corps in 1986. Vice Admiral Sahai specialised in Pathology and super-specialised in Oncopathology from AIIMS, New Delhi, and has been a professor and head of the Department of Lab Sciences at Army Hospital Research and Referral (AHRR) and Base Hospital Delhi Cantt (BHDC), according to the Indian Navy statement.

Vice Admiral Sahai has also been a professor at Department of Pathology, Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune.

Before her current appointment, she was the first woman commandant of AMC Centre & College and O i/C Records.

Vice Admiral Sahai is also the first woman officer to be elected as Col Commandant of the Army Medical Corps.

She was a recipient of the Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER) fellowship for the advancement of Medical Education from Philadelphia 2013-14 and was awarded the Sena Medal in 2024 and the Vishisht Seva Medal in 2018.
