Defence Minister Rajnath Singh visited the National Civil Rights Museum and interacted with the Indian community in Memphis, Tennessee, on 25 August, the last day of his tour to the US. Singh underlined India’s growth story in the last decade and described the Indian diaspora as a ‘living bridge’ between the two countries.
During his US visit, Rajnath Singh interacted with the Indian diaspora from Memphis, Atlanta, Nashville, and nearby areas. He praised the community members for their accomplishments and contributions to society, science, and the economy. The Ministry of Defence’s official release stated that Singh referred to the Indian diaspora as a ‘living bridge’ between India and the US, fostering close relations and goodwill. In his remarks, he highlighted India’s growth over the last decade and expressed optimism about its promising future.

Singh also recognized the contributions of the Indian community in establishing an exhibit of Mahatma Gandhi and installing two honorary ‘Gandhi Way’ street signs near the National Civil Rights Museum on the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi in 2019. During his visit to the National Civil Rights Museum, he noted, “The museum traces the history of the civil rights movement in the US from the 17th century to the present and is built around the site of Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination in 1968. It also features a bust of Mahatma Gandhi, acknowledging his influence on nonviolent struggle,” as stated in the release.
