India and Russia have entered negotiations for the supply of additional S-400 Triumf long-range surface-to-air missile systems, even as New Delhi faces mounting U.S. pressure to scale down its defence and energy ties with Moscow, according to media reports on Tuesday.

Dmitry Shugayev, head of Russia’s Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation, told TASS news agency that the two sides were exploring the possibility of new deliveries. “There is potential to expand our cooperation in this area. That means new deliveries. For now, we are in the negotiation stage,” he said.

India had signed a $5.5 billion deal with Russia in 2018 for five S-400 systems. So far, Moscow has delivered three, with the first arriving in 2021. The remaining two are scheduled for delivery in 2026 and 2027. The advanced missile batteries have already been integrated into the Indian Air Force’s operational network, with reported deployments in Pathankot, Rajasthan, and Gujarat.

The S-400 is among the most sophisticated air defence systems globally, capable of detecting targets at ranges up to 600 km and neutralising them at distances of 400 km. Each system combines multifunctional radar, mobile launchers, anti-aircraft missile batteries, autonomous detection and targeting systems, and a command-and-control unit. Indian armed forces credit the system with playing a significant role during Operation Sindoor and subsequent tensions with Pakistan in May.

The renewed defence discussions come as strategic ties between New Delhi and Washington experience turbulence. Last month, President Donald Trump imposed a 50% tariff on Indian imports, citing New Delhi’s continued procurement of Russian oil and weaponry. Russia accounted for 36% of India’s arms imports between 2020 and 2024.
