India-Sri Lanka Maritime Exercise SLINEX-24 is scheduled at Vizag from 17-20 December

The Sri Lanka–India Exercise (SLINEX-24), a three-day bilateral naval drill, is set to take place in Visakhapatnam under the aegis of the Eastern Naval Command from 17 to 20 December. Initiated in 2005, this annual exercise has become a cornerstone of maritime cooperation between the two nations, reflecting their commitment to regional security and collaboration.

According to the Indian Navy, SLINEX-24 will unfold in two distinct phases: the Harbour Phase (17–18 December) and the Sea Phase (19–20 December). During the Harbour Phase, naval personnel from both countries will engage in professional exchanges, operational planning sessions, and social interactions to foster camaraderie and mutual understanding. The Sea Phase will feature advanced joint operations, including Special Forces exercises, gunnery drills, communication protocols, seamanship practices, navigation evolutions, and coordinated helicopter operations.

The Indian Navy will be represented by INS Sumitra, a Naval Offshore Patrol Vessel of the Eastern Fleet, along with a contingent from its Special Forces unit. Sri Lanka will field SLNS Sayura, an offshore patrol vessel with a Special Forces team.

The exercise will officially commence with an inaugural ceremony on 17 December, marking the start of the Harbour Phase. The following days will see both navies seamlessly transitioning into the Sea Phase, where they will undertake complex exercises designed to enhance interoperability, tactical coordination, and the exchange of best practices.

Over the years, SLINEX has evolved in scope and complexity, serving as a vital platform for both navies to strengthen their operational synergy and reinforce maritime security. The 2024 edition aims to further deepen maritime ties between India and Sri Lanka while upholding a safe, secure, and rules-based maritime order in the region.
