The Indian and French navies successfully concluded the Varuna 2025 bilateral naval exercise, held from March 19 to 22 in the Arabian Sea. This edition of the exercise showcased the operational synergy between the two maritime forces and featured advanced platforms from both nations.

A key highlight was the participation of aircraft carriers INS Vikrant and Charles de Gaulle, along with their respective fighter aircraft, Rafale-M, destroyers, frigates, and an Indian Scorpene-class submarine. Their involvement underscored the growing strategic partnership and deepening maritime cooperation between India and France.

“Varuna 2025 brought together the Indian and French navies, reaffirming their enduring partnership and commitment to regional stability,” the Indian Navy stated.

Rafale-M, Anti-Submarine Warfare on Focus

The exercise included a variety of complex, multi-domain drills designed to enhance tactical and operational proficiency in high-intensity scenarios. French Navy Rafale-M fighters and Indian Navy MiG-29K aircraft conducted realistic combat simulations to strengthen their joint capabilities in countering aerial threats. Meanwhile, an Indian Scorpene-class submarine, along with ASW-capable frigates from both navies, focused on refining underwater detection and engagement tactics, thereby improving overall domain awareness.

The fleets showcased their combined combat capabilities through intricate surface warfare manoeuvres, executing complex and coordinated engagements. Additionally, fleet tankers from both navies conducted Replenishment at Sea (RAS) exercises involving logistical drills to enhance operational endurance and interoperability for sustained maritime operations.

According to both navies, this edition of Varuna achieved unprecedented operational coordination, surpassing previous iterations in complexity and effectiveness.

Strengthening Indo-Pacific Maritime Security

The exercise reinforced India and France’s shared commitment to upholding a rules-based maritime order and enhancing stability in the Indo-Pacific region. The structured drills provided invaluable operational experience, fostering a deeper understanding of each navy’s doctrines and improving their ability to operate seamlessly in high-threat maritime environments.

Since its inception, Varuna has been a cornerstone of India-France defence relations, reflecting both nations’ commitment to safeguarding global sea lanes and addressing shared maritime security challenges.
