A year after being badly damaged in India’s Operation Sindoor strikes, the Markaz Subhanallah complex in Pakistan’s Bahawalpur, headquarters of the UN-sanctioned terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), has reportedly been restored and is operational again.
Fresh footage of the facility shows extensive reconstruction, including rebuilt domes, fresh plaster and paintwork, and new marble flooring that appears to cover areas damaged in the strikes. Deep blast-affected sections of the main hall have reportedly been filled with concrete.
Several satellite structures of the terror base, including the Al-Sabir seminary and residential facilities used by JeM leadership, were demolished to make way for new construction, according to the report.
The reconstruction is understood to have continued for nearly 15 months. Intelligence inputs cited in the report allege that Pakistani authorities provided about PKR 250 million in cash to JeM, of which around PKR 110 million was earmarked for restoration of the central complex.
The reported financial support has raised fresh questions over Pakistan’s alleged assistance to a UN-designated terrorist organisation despite international sanctions against JeM.
The Markaz Subhanallah complex has long been associated with JeM and its leadership. The group is headed by Masood Azhar, who was designated a global terrorist by the United Nations in 2019.
Azhar has reportedly stepped back from the daily management of the Bahawalpur complex due to health issues. His brothers, Talha Al-Saif and Mohinuddin Aurangzeb, also known as Ammar Alvi, have taken over the daily operations. According to intelligence sources, they now oversee activities at Markaz Subhanallah and manage the organisation’s affairs at the facility.
Sources cited in the report further claimed that Azhar and senior JeM figure Rauf Asghar remain sheltered in Pakistan’s Nawabshah district in Sindh under alleged government protection. The claims could not be independently verified.
The reported reopening of the Bahawalpur complex comes amid continued international scrutiny of Pakistan over the presence and activities of UN-sanctioned terrorist organisations and their leaders on its soil.
