The Indian Navy’s flagship Theatre Level Operational Exercise, Tropex-25, is currently underway in the Indian Ocean Region, serving as a testament to India’s maritime strength and joint military preparedness. Held biennially, this exercise brings together the full spectrum of operational Indian Navy units alongside significant contributions from the Indian Army, Indian Air Force (IAF), and Indian Coast Guard. Tropex-25 aims to validate the Indian Navy’s core warfighting skills while ensuring a synchronized, integrated response to safeguard India’s maritime security interests against conventional, asymmetric, and hybrid threats.
The exercise, which runs from January to March 2025, has multiple phases—both in the harbour and at sea. These include intricate combat operations, cyber and electronic warfare, live weapon firings during the Joint Work-Up phase, and an Amphibious Exercise (AMPHEX).
According to the Indian Navy statement, Tropex-25 is a formidable display of maritime capability involving the combined strength of approximately 65 Indian Navy ships, 9 submarines, and over 80 aircraft of various types, all engaging in complex operational scenarios. These exercises are designed to test and refine the Navy’s concept of operations, emphasizing forward-deployed sustenance and seamless interoperability with other services.
Among the highlights of Tropex-25 are cutting-edge platforms such as the indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, Visakhapatnam and Kolkata-class destroyers, Kalvari-class submarines, and advanced aircraft including MiG-29K fighters, P-8I maritime patrol aircraft, HALE Sea Guardian UAVs, and MH-60R Seahawk helicopters.
“In a move to deepen synergy across the services, the Indian Army, IAF, and Coast Guard are fully integrated into the exercise,” the statement stated. The IAF has deployed Sukhoi-30s, Jaguars, C-130s, flight refuelling aircraft, and AWACS, while the Indian Army has contributed an infantry brigade of over 600 troops. The Coast Guard complements these efforts with over 10 ships and aircraft, further bolstering the joint operational framework.
