The United Kingdom and India have launched Exercise Konkan, a high-profile naval exercise featuring aircraft carriers and advanced warships from both nations. This year’s iteration of the bilateral Exercise marks a historic firstтАФthe simultaneous deployment of both nations’ Carrier Strike Groups at sea.

“Whilst the Exercise has been biennial since 2004, it marks the first time in history that a British and Indian Carrier Strike Group will conduct a maritime exercise together,” the British High Commission said in its statement.

The timing of the Exercise is notable, as it takes place just days before UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer visits India on his first official trip as head of government. The joint naval operations not only demonstrate growing defence alignment but also reflect both countries’ broader commitment to maintaining a free, open, and rules-based Indo-Pacific.

A New Chapter in Naval Collaboration

While Exercise Konkan has been held regularly since 2004, this is the first edition to involve full-scale carrier groups from both sides: the Royal Navy’s HMS Prince of Wales and the Indian Navy’s INS Vikrant. Over the next four days, starting today, the two forces will conduct advanced drills involving submarines, fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, and surface vessels.

“Participation of the UK Carrier Strike Group (UK CSG 25), led by HMS Prince of Wales, including assets from Norway and Japan, has added sheen to this year’s edition of the Exercise. The Indian side will be represented by the carrier battle group of the indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant in company with other surface, sub-surface and air combatants,” the Indian Navy said in its statement.

The UK CSG is currently deployed as part of Operation Highmast, an eight-month mission aimed at strengthening military ties across key regions. Its integration with India’s naval assets is seen as a practical step forward in operational cooperation, particularly in the Indo-Pacific, where both nations are seeking to play a stabilising role.

Vision for the Indo-Pacific

British officials emphasised that the Exercise is more than a display of military strength; it is a tangible manifestation of shared strategic priorities.

“The UK and India both recognise the Indo-Pacific as central to global prosperity and security,” said Lindy Cameron, the British High Commissioner to India. “Exercise Konkan reflects the strength of our defence ties and our commitment to regional stability.”

The Indo-Pacific is increasingly seen by London as vital to its foreign and defence policy, especially following the UK’s Integrated Review, which highlighted the region as key to long-term national interests.

Ahead of a Crucial Diplomatic Visit

Prime Minister Starmer’s upcoming visit to India, scheduled for 8тАУ9 October, is expected to focus on the IndiaтАУUK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, particularly the 10-year ‘Vision 2035’ roadmap. It includes cooperation on defence, technology, trade, and climate action.

In Mumbai, both Prime Ministers will also address the Global Fintech Fest, engage with business leaders, and review progress on the IndiaтАУUK Free Trade Agreement, which is currently under negotiation.

By aligning a major military engagement with a diplomatic visit, both nations are clearly signalling that defence and economic ties go hand in hand in shaping their future partnership.

Next Step

After the conclusion of the naval Exercise, the UK Carrier Strike Group will dock in Mumbai and Goa for further engagement, including showcasing British innovation and strengthening industry connections. An air defence drill with the Indian Air Force is also planned, expanding the scope of collaboration to multiple military domains.

“Following the conclusion of Exercise Konkan 2025 with the Indian Navy on 12 October 2025, UK CSG 25 is scheduled to participate in a one-day exercise with the Indian Air Force off the western coast of India on 14 October 2025, prior to continuing with its planned deployment,” the statement added.

As regional dynamics evolve, especially in the maritime sphere, India and the UK are positioning themselves as natural security partners.
