DRDO conducts successful flight-trials of Very Short-Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS)

The Defence Research and Development Organisation has conducted three consecutive flight trials of the Very Short-Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS) from the Integrated Test Range, Chandipur, off the Odisha coast, revalidating the missile’s capability to engage fast-moving aerial threats under varied operational conditions.

According to the DRDO, the trials were aimed at confirming the system’s ability to neutralise high-speed targets flying at different speeds, ranges and altitudes. In all three tests, the missiles successfully intercepted and destroyed aerial targets designed to simulate hostile aircraft across multiple threat scenarios, meeting the required engagement parameters.

The trials were carried out in the system’s final deployment configuration. Target acquisition and missile launches were carried out by field operators, reflecting conditions expected during operational use.

Data gathered by telemetry, electro-optical tracking systems, and radars deployed at the Chandipur range confirmed the missile’s effectiveness against a range of aerial threats. Representatives of the three Services, senior DRDO officials and development-cum-production partners were present during the user validation trials.

VSHORADS is an indigenously developed man-portable air defence system designed by the Research Centre Imarat in collaboration with other DRDO laboratories and industry partners. The system is intended to meet operational requirements of the Army, Navy and Air Force.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the DRDO, the armed forces and industry partners on the successful trials, saying the back-to-back tests mark a significant milestone and the system is expected to be inducted into the armed forces in the near future.

Secretary, Department of Defence Research and Development and DRDO Chairman Samir V Kamat also commended the teams involved in the design and development of the system, along with the Services and industry partners who participated in the trials.
