Amol A. Gokkhale did his B Tech from IIT Bombay and Ph D from University of Pittsburgh. He served in DRDO for 30 years, retiring as Distinguished Scientist and Director, Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory, Hyderabad in July 2015. At DMRL, he led projects on aluminium lithium alloys for Light Combat Aircraft and INSAT series satellites, aluminium alloy castings for torpedoes and very high temperature materials for hypersonic vehicles. As Director of DMRL, he guided project teams and initiated new activities in the areas of naval steels, investment castings for aero-engines, life extension, super hard armour materials, advanced anti tank ammunition, high temperature electronic materials and tungsten extraction to name a few. He pursued interactions with industries for execution and initiation of ToT's in titanium sponge, rare earth permanent magnets, spark-free tools and compressor disc forgings. He has been recipient of several awards from DRDO, National Research and Development Corporation and the Indian Institute of Metals, and is a Fellow of Indian National Academy of Engineering. He is currently Professor, Mechanical Engineering, IIT, Bombay.
