Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan on Tuesday underscored the need for India’s armed forces to rapidly adapt to disruptive technologies, reassess outdated organisational structures, and prioritise jointness among the Army, Navy, and Air Force to effectively counter contemporary and future security threats.

Delivering the keynote address at the inaugural edition of the Annual Trident Lecture Series, organised by the Centre for Joint Warfare Studies (CENJOWS) on its Foundation Day, Gen Chauhan said the evolving nature of warfare demands a sharper focus on technological convergence and integrated operations to safeguard national interests.

The event, brought together senior defence leadership, strategic thinkers, and scholars to deliberate on the theme “Dominating the Future Battlespace.”

One of the highlights was the release of the first CDS General Bipin Rawat Paper, focusing on Manned-Unmanned Teaming (MUM-T), a tribute to India’s first CDS and his contributions to joint operational planning and transformative military thinking. The August 2025 issue of Synergy, CENJOWS’ flagship journal, was also launched, featuring expert commentary on emerging strategic and technological trends.

Highlighting the pace and scale of required reforms, the Chief of Integrated Defence Staff (CIDS) delivered a lecture titled “Urgency in Tri-Services Reforms”, mapping out timelines and institutional imperatives for integrated warfighting capabilities. It was followed by a talk from the Deputy CIDS (Doctrine, Organisation and Training) on “Imbibing Indian Heritage Statecraft in Future Warfighting”, which explored the relevance of indigenous strategic thought in shaping modern military doctrines.

The Trident Lecture Series aims to serve as a platform for critical reflection, strategic foresight, and policy innovation, addressing the rapidly shifting dynamics of warfare and defence preparedness in the 21st century.
