General Anil Chauhan, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), embarked on an official visit to Japan on 10 December. The primary objective of this visit is to enhance the already robust defence relations between India and Japan, highlighting the escalating significance of their defence cooperation.
During his stay, Gen Anil Chauhan is slated to engage with high-ranking military officials in Japan, visiting various defence units and establishments. Noteworthy events during the tour include a meeting with Japan’s Minister of Defence, Minoru Kihara, discussions with the Chief of Staff, Joint Staff, Japan Self-Defence Forces General Yoshida Yoshihide, and interactions with key figures such as Commissioner of Acquisition Technology & Logistics Agency (ATLA) Fukasawa Masaki and Vice President of National Institute of Defence Studies (NIDS), Japan Major General Adachi Yoshiki.
Moreover, the CDS will engage with the Faculty and Research Scholars at NIDS, visit military installations, and participate in discussions aimed at fostering mutual understanding. The agenda encompasses dialogue on regional security, contributions to bolster bilateral defence cooperation, and collaboration in defence equipment and technology, according to a press statement issued by the Ministry of Defence (MoD).
A key visit aspect involves General Anil Chauhan’s interaction with Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force (JMSDF) units and meetings with the Commander in Chief Self Defence Fleet at Funakoshi JMSDF Base. Additionally, he will pay respects at the Hiroshima Peace Park, laying a wreath in memory of the Hiroshima victims and offering special tributes at the Mahatma Gandhi statue in Hiroshima, emphasising the shared commitment to peace and tranquillity in the region.
As India and Japan mark 71 years of diplomatic ties in 2023, this visit underscores both nations’ dedication to fortifying their special Strategic and Global Partnership. Reflecting the enduring camaraderie developed over the past seven decades, the visit is poised to further elevate bilateral cooperation, especially in the realm of defence collaboration, addressing various strategic issues.
