Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, on Tuesday, witnessed the combat capabilities of aircraft carriers INS Vikrant and INS Vikramaditya in a “twin-carrier” operation in the Arabian Sea. Against the backdrop of China’s increasing military assertiveness in the Indian Ocean region, the wargame took place amid growing global concerns over Houthi militants targeting cargo ships in the Red Sea and adjacent areas in recent months. The Navy emphasised that this demonstration served as a potent affirmation of the pivotal role of sea-based air power in maintaining maritime superiority.
Addressing the top naval commanders on the inaugural session of the three-day conference onboard aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya, the Defence Minister said jointness and synergy among the armed forces is crucial in today’s ever-changing geopolitical scenario. He lauded the Indian Navy for consistently taking a leadership role in the Indian Ocean region, showcasing enhanced multi-dimensional capabilities. During his speech, Singh underscored the Navy’s crucial role in ensuring maritime security and upholding India’s sovereignty. He urged the commanders to stay prepared for various challenges while reassuring them of the government’s unwavering support.
“If India’s reputation has increased in the Indian Ocean Region and wider Indo-Pacific, it is due to the bravery and promptness of our Navy,” he said and added, “It has become synonymous with credibility in the Indo-Pacific region. The Navy is a reflection of India’s growing stature on the global canvas.” He also spoke about the increasing use of drones in modern-day warfare and various maritime operations.
The naval conference is expected to discuss a range of pivotal matters, including China’s expanding military activities in the Indian Ocean and the challenges posed by Houthi militants targeting cargo vessels in the Red Sea and nearby regions, besides piracy in the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Aden.
The Naval Commanders’ Conference, this time, is being held in a hybrid format. Over the three-day conference, Chief of Defence Staff Gen Anil Chauhan, alongside Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar, Army Chief Gen Manoj Pande, and Air Chief Marshal V R Chaudhari, will interact with naval commanders to discuss various topics, including strategies to enhance convergence among the tri-services. Rajnath Singh underscored the importance of jointness and synergy of the three Services amidst the constantly evolving geopolitical scenario.
