The maiden flight of the first production series fighter of LCA Tejas Mark-1A, an advanced LCA Mk-1 variant already inducted by the Indian Air Force (IAF), took place in Bengaluru on Thursday. The Defence PSU Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), responsible for manufacturing the Tejas Mk-1A, in collaboration with the Bengaluru-based DRDO lab Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA), has conducted several taxi trials over the past few days.
According to the HAL, the first Aircraft, LA5033 of the Tejas Mk1A Aircraft series, took to the skies from the HAL facility in Bengaluru today. It was a successful sortie that lasted 18 minutes.

“HAL achieved this significant production milestone with concurrent design and development amid major supply chain challenges in the global geo-political environment subsequent to the contract signature in February 2021”, said CB Ananthakrishnan, CMD, HAL. The plane was piloted by Chief Test Pilot Group Captain K K Venugopal (Retired).
Despite facing global supply chain challenges and geopolitical issues, the successful maiden flight of the Tejas Mk1A showcases the resilience and determination of the Indian defence industry. HAL’s Chief expressed his gratitude to the Ministry of Defence, Indian Air Force, Defence Research and Development Organisation/Aeronautical Development Agency, CEMILAC, and DGAQA for their unwavering support in this accomplishment. He also acknowledged the valuable contributions of the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) involved in the project.
The state-of-the-art Tejas Mk1A is equipped with advanced electronic radar, warfare, and communication systems, offering enhanced combat capability and improved maintenance features. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) aims to expedite the Tejas Mk1A’s induction into the Indian Air Force and increase production through the established three lines at HAL.
Currently, the Indian Air Force operates 40 Tejas MK-1 aircraft. In October 2023, they ordered 83 more Tejas MK-1A fighters, and plans are in place to procure an additional 97 jets from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). The Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) plays a pivotal role in strengthening India’s growing defence manufacturing industry.
