India–Maldives Defence Ties Back on Track: Aircraft Operation Agreement Renewed

0

In a significant boost to bilateral defence cooperation, India and the Maldives have renewed the operational agreement for Indian helicopters and Dornier aircraft deployed in the island nation. The announcement was made by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, speaking to the media after a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu in Male.

“India’s helicopters and military aircraft are currently operational in the Maldives,” Misri confirmed, signalling a renewed phase of strategic collaboration between the two countries.

This significant development took place during Prime Minister Modi’s visit to the Maldives, where he was honoured as the Chief Guest for the country’s Independence Day celebrations. This gesture symbolises the reaffirmation of the close ties between the two nations.

Defence Cooperation Restored After Strained Phase

After assuming office in 2023, President Muizzu had suspended the operation of Indian military platforms and demanded the withdrawal of Indian uniformed personnel, moves that strained diplomatic relations, as Muizzu initially aligned closer with China.

However, India maintained a constructive approach, continuing economic and development support. Over time, the Maldives signalled a shift.

“President Muizzu appealed to the Indian government to resume the Indian military aircraft,” Misri said, highlighting a turning point in the diplomatic engagement.

Indian Defence Personnel Replaced with Civilian Operators

India currently operates three aircraft in the Maldives, one helicopter, and two Dornier planes, primarily used for humanitarian missions, medical evacuations, and maritime surveillance.

“These aircraft are being operated with the help of trained personnel. Personnel from an Indian military company have been deployed in place of Indian uniformed soldiers,” Misri explained, noting that the new arrangement respects the sensitivities of the host nation while preserving vital operations.

This model enables India to maintain its support in areas like disaster relief and maritime security while adhering to local political constraints.

A Symbolic Gesture: PM Modi Banner on Defence Ministry Building

In a widely circulated image, a large banner of PM Narendra Modi has been displayed on the newly constructed Maldivian Ministry of Defence building in Male, a project built with technical support from India. The building features solar energy systems and a modern command centre, showcasing India’s role in strengthening Maldivian defence infrastructure.

The display of PM Modi’s image is being seen as a symbolic gesture of restored trust and goodwill.

The renewal of the aircraft operation agreement, combined with the warmth of PM Modi’s visit, signals a strong rebound in bilateral relations and reinforces India’s commitment to its neighbours, even amid geopolitical challenges.
