India’s Defence Production Hits Record Rs 1.51 Lakh Crore in FY 2024-25

India’s annual defence production surged to an all-time high of Rs 1,50,590 crore in FY 2024-25, marking an 18% jump from the previous year’s Rs 1.27 lakh crore and an impressive 90% leap since FY 2019-20.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh hailed the achievement as a “clear indicator of India’s strengthening defence industrial base,” crediting the Department of Defence Production, Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs), public manufacturers, and private industry for their role in the milestone.

DPSUs and other public sector units contributed about 77% of total output, while the private sector accounted for 23%, up from 21% a year earlier, reflecting its expanding footprint in the defence ecosystem. Production by DPSUs rose 16% year-on-year, while private sector output jumped 28%.

Officials attributed the consistent growth across both sectors to policy reforms, improved ease of doing business, and a decade-long push for indigenisation under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. The government has prioritised reducing import dependence and building a self-reliant defence manufacturing base capable of meeting domestic needs and boosting exports.

The export front also saw record numbers, with defence exports climbing to Rs 23,622 crore in FY 2024-25, a 12% rise from Rs 21,083 crore the previous year.

With sustained policy backing, greater private participation, and strengthening export capacity, the Defence Ministry says the sector is well-positioned for further acceleration in the coming years.
