Yantra India Limited (YIL) gets Miniratna Category status

The government has granted Miniratna Category-I status to Yantra India Limited (YIL), marking a major upgrade for the defence PSU nearly four years after its formation.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh approved the decision, citing YIL’s rapid transition into a profitable and performance-driven company. He said the move reflects confidence in the company’s management and its ability to meet the financial and operational benchmarks required for Miniratna recognition.

Singh noted that YIL’s progress aligns with the government’s push to modernise India’s defence manufacturing base, boost indigenisation and scale up domestic production.

Since its inception, Yantra India has posted strong business growth. Sales rose from Rs 956.32 crore in the second half of 2021–22 to Rs 3,108.79 crore in FY 2024–25. The company has also made a clear entry into exports. From zero overseas sales in 2021–22 (H2), exports touched Rs 321.77 crore in FY 2024–25.

YIL manufactures a wide range of defence products. These include carbon fibre and glass composites, aluminium alloy components, medium- and large-calibre ammunition assemblies, systems for armoured vehicles, and assemblies for artillery guns and main battle tanks.

With Miniratna Category-I status, YIL will get greater financial autonomy. Its Board can now approve capital expenditure of up to Rs 500 crore without prior government clearance. It is expected to accelerate modernisation, capacity expansion, and the execution of new projects.

Yantra India was formed after the corporatisation of the Ordnance Factory Board on October 1, 2021, which led to the creation of seven defence PSUs. The reform aimed to improve efficiency, accountability and innovation in defence production. YIL operates as a Schedule ‘A’ DPSU under the Department of Defence Production.

Earlier, in May 2025, the government granted Miniratna-I status to Munitions India Limited, Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited and India Optel Limited.

The latest decision underlines the Centre’s Atmanirbhar Bharat push in defence manufacturing, with a focus on reducing imports, strengthening domestic capabilities and expanding India’s defence exports.
