Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has called on military leaders to embrace critical thinking, adapt swiftly to unexpected challenges, and harness cutting-edge technologies to gain a strategic edge in today’s fast-evolving geopolitical landscape. Speaking at the National Defence College (NDC) in New Delhi on October 19, he emphasized the need for officers to become forward-looking strategists capable of anticipating future conflicts, understanding global political dynamics, and leading with intellect and empathy.
“Warfare, today, has surpassed the traditional battlefields and now operates in a multi-domain environment where cyber, space and information warfare are as critical as conventional operations. Cyber-attacks, disinformation campaigns and economic warfare have become tools that can destabilise a whole nation without a single shot being fired. There is a need for military leaders to possess the ability to analyse complex problems and devise innovative solutions,” Singh said.
He emphasized that modern military leaders must be adept at analyzing complex problems and devising innovative solutions. The Minister underscored the rapid pace of technological advancements, noting that these innovations are reshaping the contours of warfare.
“From Drones and Autonomous Vehicles to Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Quantum Computing, the technologies shaping modern warfare are evolving at a breath-taking pace. Our officers must understand these technologies and be able to harness them effectively,” he stated.
Singh urged the officers to conduct thorough analyses on how best to utilize emerging technologies like AI, which has the potential to revolutionize military operations. However, he stressed the importance of setting boundaries on the level of autonomy granted to AI, underscoring the critical need for human intervention. As AI becomes more integrated into military decision-making processes, issues surrounding accountability and the potential for unintended consequences become increasingly important, he warned.

Highlighting the need for preparedness in the face of adversaries weaponizing everyday technologies, Singh remarked “The mere thought that our adversaries exploiting the tools serves as a reminder of the urgency with which we must prepare for these threats. Institutions like NDC must evolve their course curriculum to not only incorporate case studies on such unconventional warfare but also to drive strategic innovation. The ability to anticipate, adapt and respond will define our readiness in the face of ever-evolving challenges”.
Singh also addressed the ethical dilemmas military leaders face regarding the role of machines in life-and-death decisions. He stressed that academic instruction in ethics, philosophy, and military history provides officers with the intellectual tools to navigate these sensitive issues and make sound judgments. He praised defence academic institutions like NDC for instilling a strong moral framework in future leaders, ensuring they are well-equipped to address the complexities of modern warfare.
He further urged military leaders to develop a deep understanding of geopolitics, international relations, and the intricacies of global security alliances. Decisions made by the military can have far-reaching consequences that extend beyond the battlefield into diplomacy, economics, and international law, he noted.
Defence Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to building a technologically advanced and agile military capable of responding to emerging threats and safeguarding national security. While efforts are underway to ensure that the armed forces remain future-ready and resilient, institutions like NDC play a pivotal role in shaping the mindset of military leaders, equipping them with the expertise needed to navigate the complexities of modern warfare.
