Mission Sudarshan Chakra: India’s Defence Gamechanger

In his 79th Independence Day address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled Mission Sudarshan Chakra, a landmark initiative to revolutionise India’s defence shield. In this week’s Defence Mantra, Nitin Gokhale explains what it is all about. The mission envisions a multi-layered, Iron Dome-like security system capable of intercepting drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic threats while also incorporating offensive counter-strike capabilities.

The Prime Minister underlined that by 2035, Sudarshan Chakra will be fully researched, developed, and manufactured in India — reflecting his government’s strong push for Atmanirbharta (self-reliance) in defence. The system will integrate cutting-edge surveillance, interceptor batteries, and command-and-control, aiming to protect both strategic and civilian assets. Nitin explains that by combining shield and sword, India seeks not just to defend but to deter and punish aggressors.

This announcement sets the stage for the upcoming Combined Commanders’ Conference (CCC), expected in September, where the Prime Minister and military leadership will deliberate on future warfare, jointness, and theatre commands. With Sudarshan Chakra now part of the roadmap, the CCC could mark a turning point in how India structures its long-term security strategy.

Together, Mission Sudarshan Chakra and the CCC highlight a transformational vision—to build a self-reliant, modern defence architecture that is both protective and pre-emptive.
