Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Upendra Dwivedi is set to embark on an official visit to Nepal next week, marking a significant milestone in the enduring military partnership between the two nations. This visit underscores the historical and strategic depth of India-Nepal military ties, which have evolved over more than a century, fostering regional security and cooperation.
India and Nepal share a relationship rooted in cultural, historical, and geographical ties. These connections have become a solid military partnership pivotal to enhancing regional security. General Dwivedi’s visit aims to strengthen these bonds further by fostering collaboration across areas such as joint military training, exercises, and discussions on pressing regional and global security challenges.
Key Focus: Defence Modernisation and Training
Regular exchanges characterize Nepal and India’s defence cooperation, shared training programs, and modernization initiatives. According to Indian Army sources, the visit will emphasize enhancing military capabilities through bilateral programs.
This year, over 300 Nepali Army personnel have received specialized training in India, focusing on counterinsurgency, peacekeeping, and leadership development. Similarly, Indian Army personnel benefit from advanced courses in Nepal, reflecting the mutual commitment to professional growth.
Joint Military Exercises in December
A cornerstone of India-Nepal military ties is the annual ‘Surya Kiran’ joint exercise, which focuses on counterterrorism, disaster relief, and humanitarian assistance. The 18th edition of this exercise, with an expanded scope aimed at enhancing interoperability between the two armed forces, is scheduled for December 2024 in Nepal.
In addition to joint exercises, India supports Nepal’s defence modernization efforts by providing small arms, vehicles, and advanced training simulators. Collaborative efforts through forums like the Nepal-India Bilateral Consultative Group on Security Issues (NIBCGSI) have further solidified this partnership, addressing equipment needs and strategic challenges.
Nepal to Confer Honorary Rank of General to COAS
An enduring tradition between the two nations is the conferment of honorary rank of General on each other’s Army Chiefs, symbolizing their shared heritage and mutual respect. General Dwivedi’s visit is expected to strengthen this tradition, reaffirming the deep-rooted camaraderie between the two militaries.
The presence of over 88,000 Indian Army veterans in Nepal further reinforces these ties. These ex-servicemen, active in sectors such as education and healthcare, serve as a living bridge between the two nations, enhancing people-to-people connections and socio-economic development.
Additionally, General Dwivedi is expected to visit the historic Shri Muktinath Temple in Nepal. This visit holds emotional significance, as the temple features the ‘Bipin Bell,’ installed in memory of General Bipin Rawat, India’s first Chief of Defence Staff.
A Vision for Regional Security
General Dwivedi’s visit represents a critical chapter in India-Nepal military diplomacy, reflecting the shared commitment to addressing common threats such as terrorism and extremism. As both nations continue to build on their defence partnership, their collaboration will remain a cornerstone of peace and stability in South Asia.
The Indian Army source observed that this visit, by fostering military ties, cultural exchanges, and strategic cooperation, highlights the enduring strength of India-Nepal relations, ensuring mutual progress and security in an increasingly complex geopolitical landscape.
