Ukraine’s military said its forces struck a base in southern Russia’s Krasnodar region storing Shahed drones, scoring several hits.
A statement by the General Staff said the attack was carried out jointly by naval forces and the SBU intelligence service of Ukraine.
“According to available information, nearly 400 strike drones were stored there,” the statement said. “Based on objective control results, a direct hit was made on the target. Secondary explosions were observed at the site.”
It said the attack was carried out near a village identified as Oktyabrsky.
There was no official Russian comment on the Ukrainian report.
Emergency services in Krasnodar region reported a fire extending over 1,600 square metres had been brought under control in a storage area near Oktyabrsky. That village lies south of the city of Yeysk, site of a major Russian military airfield.
Emergency services said fragments of a drone had fallen on Shcherbinovsky district, near Yeysk, but denied reports from unofficial sources of a mass drone attack from Ukraine on Yeysk overnight.
Last month Russia warned that it will consider the United States and its allies to be parties to the Ukraine war. The Kremlin stated that it will use more powerful weapons if the West allows Ukraine to use long-range weapons for strikes deep into Russia. Vyacheslav Volodin, the speaker of Russia’s Duma issued a warning, stating “U.S. and other European states are becoming parties to the war in Ukraine.”
Volodin added that the United States, Germany, France, and Britain were becoming parties to the conflict. “All this will lead to the fact that our country will be forced to respond using more powerful and destructive weapons to protect its citizens,” Volodin said.
U.S. President Joe Biden said on Tuesday that his administration was “working that out now” when asked if the U.S. would lift restrictions on Ukraine using long-range weapons in the war.
