General Atomics, a major American defence company, has stated its willingness to compete for contracts in the proposed ‘Iron Dome for America’ initiative. The announcement comes after former U.S. President Donald Trump recently called for the development of a multi-layered missile defence system to counter a range of threats, similar to Israel’s Iron Dome, aimed at defending against ballistic, hypersonic, and advanced cruise missiles.
Although the ‘Iron Dome for America’ remains in the discussion phase, General Atomics has positioned itself as a strong contender. Dave Alexander, Head of the company’s aeronautics unit, told Breaking Defense that a long-range, high-resolution sensor with a “super wide area” of coverage has been in development for a decade and is now ready for production.
“This Iron Dome is perfect timing for us, and I’d be willing to go into Trump’s office and tell them we’re ready to go today,” Alexander stated.
General Atomics envisions deploying a network of sensors capable of detecting threats from both ground-based platforms and air-based systems, integrating them onto MQ-9 Reaper drones for enhanced surveillance and interception capabilities.
A few weeks ago, General Gregory Guillot, Commander of the North American Aerospace Defence Command (NORAD), emphasized that improving domain awareness remains a top priority in response to Trump’s directive.
“What we’re trying to do, is just to grab available technology combined with this new sensor that we’re talking about, so that we can get out there and scale and do it for a very affordable price,” Alexander added.
Upon taking office, Trump signed an executive order directing the development of a U.S. air defence system similar to Israel’s Iron Dome. The order cited growing threats from adversaries developing advanced missile capabilities.
“Over the past 40 years, rather than diminishing, the threat from next-generation strategic weapons has intensified and become more complex,” the executive order stated.
According to CNN, the order mandates the implementation of a next-generation missile defence shield to counter ballistic, hypersonic, and advanced cruise missiles, along with other emerging aerial threats.
The move comes amid escalating competition between the United States and China, particularly as Beijing rapidly expands its nuclear arsenal. However, the U.S. already possesses a layered air defence system, ranging from long-range Patriot missiles to shorter-range solutions such as shoulder-launched Stinger missiles.
During his first term, Trump established the U.S. Space Command and the U.S. Space Force, underscoring his administration’s focus on advanced defence capabilities. The proposed ‘Iron Dome for America’ now seeks to further enhance national security by integrating cutting-edge missile defence technologies into a cohesive, multi-layered shield.
