Vice Admiral Manish Chadha on Monday assumed charge as the Director General Naval Operations (DGNO), succeeding Vice Admiral A.N. Pramod, who took over as the Deputy Chief of Naval Staff (DCNS) on August 1.
The appointment comes at a time when the Indian Navy is maintaining a high operational tempo amid evolving security challenges in the Indian Ocean Region and continued regional tensions.
Vice Admiral Pramod had emerged as one of the prominent military faces of Operation Sindoor, regularly briefing the media on the Navy’s operational posture during the India-Pakistan military standoff.
As DGNO, Vice Admiral Chadha will oversee the planning and execution of the Navy’s operational deployments across key maritime theatres. The appointment places him at the centre of operational planning, force readiness and maritime security as the Navy expands its strategic footprint in the Indian Ocean Region.
A graduate of the 78th course of the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, Vice Admiral Chadha was commissioned into the Indian Navy in 1991. A specialist in Communication and Electronic Warfare, he is an alumnus of the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington. He has completed the Higher Command Course at the National Defence University in Washington, United States.
During a career spanning more than three decades, he has held a wide range of command, operational, instructional and staff appointments. His sea commands include Coast Guard Interceptor Boat CGS-05 and Indian Naval Ships Veer, Kirpan and Mysore.
He has also served as the Naval Attaché at the Embassy of India in Moscow. At Naval Headquarters, he was associated with several strategic projects, including Very Low Frequency (VLF) and satellite communication programmes, besides serving as Director of the International Fleet Review 2016.
After promotion to Flag Rank, Vice Admiral Chadha held key appointments including Flag Officer Commanding Gujarat Naval Area, Assistant Chief of Personnel (Administration and Civilian), Flag Officer Commanding Maharashtra Naval Area, and Assistant Chief of Personnel (Human Resource Development).
As Director General Naval Operations, he is expected to steer operational planning, capability development and force preparedness as the Navy strengthens maritime surveillance, deterrence and power projection across the region.
