The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Navy have successfully conducted four in-flight release trials of the indigenous air-droppable container ADC-150 from the Boeing P-8I Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft off the coast of Goa between February 21 and March 1.
The trials were conducted under varying and extreme release conditions to validate the system’s performance in delivering a payload of up to 150 kg, according to the Defence Ministry statement.
The ADC-150 container has been developed to enhance the Navy’s operational logistics capability, enabling rapid aerial delivery of essential stores, equipment and medical supplies to naval ships deployed far from the coast. The system is particularly intended to support vessels in distress or requiring urgent replenishment while operating in the open sea.
The Naval Science and Technological Laboratory is leading the project in Visakhapatnam, which serves as the nodal DRDO laboratory for the programme. The parachute system has been developed by the Aerial Delivery Research and Development Establishment in Agra, while the Centre for Military Airworthiness and Certification in Bengaluru provided flight clearance and certification.
Instrumentation support for the trials was provided by the Defence Research and Development Laboratory in Hyderabad.
According to officials, the ADC-150 system, tailored for the P-8I aircraft, was developed
and qualified within a short timeframe to meet the Navy’s operational requirements. With all developmental flight trials completed successfully, the system is expected to be inducted into service in the near future.
