Exercise Garuda Shakti 2026

The 11th edition of the India-Indonesia Joint Special Forces Exercise Garuda Shakti commenced at Banyuwangi, Indonesia, on October 27 and will continue until November 6, with a focus on strengthening operational coordination and enhancing the combat capabilities of the two countries’ Special Forces.

The Indian contingent comprises troops from the Parachute Regiment (Special Forces), while the Indonesian side is represented by personnel from its Special Forces. The exercise is aimed at improving mutual understanding, cooperation and interoperability through joint training and the exchange of operational expertise.

According to the Indian Army, the training programme covers tactics, techniques and procedures for special operations in jungle environments. It includes obstacle crossing, combat marksmanship, mountaineering, air assault training and combat-hardening sessions. The two contingents will also exchange knowledge on weapons, equipment and operational practices.

The exercise will culminate in a validation exercise involving simulated operational scenarios to assess the troops’ endurance, coordination and combat readiness under demanding conditions.

Garuda Shakti is part of the ongoing defence engagement between India and Indonesia, with joint training intended to improve the ability of their Special Forces to operate together in challenging operational environments. The exercise also seeks to deepen military-to-military ties between the two countries.

The previous 10th edition of the exercise was held at the Special Forces Training School in Bakloh, Himachal Pradesh, from December 3 to 12, 2025. The latest edition in Indonesia continues the bilateral training initiative, reinforcing defence cooperation between the two friendly nations.
